There are angels in our midst..."

" The generous will prosper. Those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed." Prov.11:25

"Do nothing from rivalry or conceit ,but in humility count others more significant than yourselves, let each of you look  not only to his own interests but to the interest of others."Philippians 2:3-4

Its the Christmas Season, and we as grandparents have been attending our grand children's
holiday programs.  As always, it is a joy to see the little ones sing, or play an instrument and be a part of the yearly productions.
Last night we went to our grandson's program. Jack is autistic. He is 6 years old. He is at the high end of autism. He attends a school for special needs children. These children  are at all ends of the spectrum of Autism and other disabilities.
I was amazed at the number of children that are attending this school.  I was even more amazed at the staff that works with these children every day.
The program was light hearted and the theme this year was Snowflakes. The emphasis was on how each snowflake is unique. How we as people are unique and wonderful.
All the kids were involved in the production. Some had to be wheeled out, others were actually walked by a staff member across the stage. Each one had a smile! They were joyful children that had lines to say and one child sang the Charlie Brown song, " Christmas time is here." It was beautiful.
As I sat there, so many things went through my mind. This is a constant reality in these little lives.
Disabilities, hardship, unending. How do these families cope with all this? And I realize they had no choice. But then I realized that as they were given this, they have also acquired strength and resiliency.
I was and am in awe of these families and the staff of this special needs school. They work very hard everyday to make these children's lives better for them. They bring happiness to these children and hope and fun! My respect and admiration for these people is indescribable.
Life can be very difficult. And life sometimes seems so unfair. But as these people live out their lives they have shown me, there is joy in bringing out the very best in each circumstance that can be overwhelming in the beginning.  These children are not just special needs children, these children are very  special!! They bring joy and their uniqueness to their families. Those families are given a purity, a wonder that we can't imagine.   Those teachers and staffers who  have chosen to take on the  challenges of special needs children are very special themselves. They  have chosen a very difficult vocation. But I have to believe that with that choice there are many rewarding days of breakthroughs when a new feat is accomplished in a child.

In  a world where sometimes it looks like there  seems to be a lot of self centered things going on, its very encouraging and refreshing and a joy to see that there are many lights that are  shining   in  the New Horizons School.
